Discreetly Straighten Your Smile with Invisalign Services in Lathrup Village
Get a Straighter Smile Without the Metal Hardware
Orthodontics has come a long way over the past several decades. Traditional braces have helped people straighten their smile for years, but they aren’t without their drawbacks. Metal wires and brackets may shift teeth effectively, but they are everything but aesthetically appealing. They also make it nearly impossible for people to keep the diet they had before, nor the same brushing habits.
Fortunately, alternatives to traditional orthodontics like Invisalign are an option. The dentists at Signature Smiles offer this clear option for shifting teeth inconspicuously. Learn if Invisalign is right for you by contacting our office today!
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a treatment alternative to traditional orthodontics. Instead of using metal brackets and an archwire to shift teeth into a new position gently, Invisalign uses a series of FDA-approved, medical-grade plastic trays. Each pair is designed to represent a different stage of realignment while still being a completely removable option. This makes it much easier to practice daily oral care and eat the foods you enjoy. The trays are also transparent, so there’s little worry about making changes to your appearance.
What Does the Process Entail?
During your Invisalign consultation, you’ll speak with one of our highly-trained dentists to determine your needs and eligibility. If eligible, the dentist will take impressions of your current smile and bite, send that data to an offsite Invisalign lab and build a treatment plan from there. Thanks to Invisalign’s proprietary software, dentists can show patients what their smile will look like after treatment before they even finish wearing the first pair.
Each pair is worn for about two weeks at a time, then replace with the next pair in the series. Because the entire series is created from the start, you don’t have to visit the dentist as often for checkups. After beginning a new pair, some minor discomfort will appear, but this is a normal part of the realignment.
For the most effective results, you should wear the aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours a day, only removing to brush, eat or drink fluids other than water. Total treatment time can vary from 6 to 18 months depending on your case. After completion, you’ll need to wear a retainer for the first 6 to 12 months to prevent relapse.
Tips for Proper Care
While the aligners themselves are very durable, they are not designed to withstand the forces associated with chewing. Any time you want to eat or chew gum, you should remove the aligners. If you want them to keep their transparent appearance, avoid wearing them immediately after eating staining foods unless you plan on brushing or rinsing your mouth out afterward.
To keep them clean and plaque-free, purchase Invisalign’s unique blend of cleaning crystals. Let them soak in cool water as you perform your oral care routine, then rinse them before wearing. Use a dedicated toothbrush to remove loose food debris inside the trays.
