What are My Options to Whiten My Smile?

A woman smiles with the word "after" writing next to her left right side that is whiter than her left side that has the word "before" next to it.A bright smile can light up a room, improve your interactions with others, and improve your self-esteem. If you want to have a whiter smile, there are steps you can take to get there. Continue reading to learn what you can do to improve your smile’s shine.

Brush Daily (and Don’t Forget to Floss)

Brushing your teeth daily is one of the most important actions you can do to create and keep a white smile. Adding flossing to your brushing schedule will deepen the impact of your regular teeth brushing. Make sure to brush with care so as not to scrape off the enamel from your teeth. The gum line is the boundary where people either are too aggressive or not aggressive enough - scrub with circles for at least two minutes.

Don’t forget the whitening toothpaste. Toothpaste offers many varieties of options, but if you would like to focus on whitening your teeth, there is only one choice for you - the one with a whitening bonus. Some of these whitening toothpastes will have hydrogen peroxide, whereas others focus on fighting new stains with a gritty mineral called silica.

Regular Visits to the Dentist

A solid tooth brushing and flossing schedule is a necessary first step. Next up, make sure to visit your dentist regularly - at least two times per year - to remove plaque and ensure you have healthy teeth. Your dentist will also be able to ensure you don’t have any underlying issues that could lead to diseases in your gums, teeth, or mouth.

Stop Smoking and Watch What You Put in Your Mouth

Smoking, in general, invites many health issues into your mouth and your life. In terms of whitening, the tar and tobacco in nicotine drastically worsens the yellow hue on smoker’s teeth. When you stop smoking, your smile, breath, heart, and lungs will all get a boost.

Aside from lighting up a smoke, some foods and drinks can darken your smile. Watch out for the following:

  • Coffee
  • Red wine
  • White wine
  • Pop
  • Tea
  • Berries
  • Curry
  • Balsamic Vinegar

None of these foods or drinks will ruin your teeth, but each can cause staining. Luckily, the extrinsic stains these consumables lead to can be cleaned or at least lessened. However, the permanent stains caused by consumables such as antibiotics cause more of a problem. You can still eat and drink the items on the list above, just make sure to have water within 30 minutes, the sooner, the better. Avoid brushing right away as that will force the acid from the food or drink onto the teeth.

Going All the Way with Dental Veneers

Another option for you to have whiter teeth is to choose dental veneers. Veneers only take two visits to get your smile, looking like a movie star’s. Veneers are an investment, but they offer complete alignment of your teeth, a unified shape, and color for each tooth, and streamlined appearance for all of your teeth. This process will change your smile for the rest of your life!

The team at Signature Smiles Dental is here to help you get and maintain the whitest, healthiest smile possible. There are many whitening options available depending on your budget and the current state of your teeth, gum, and mouth health.
