How Often Should Kids be Getting Flourid Treatments?

A dental patient wears protective glasses and opens her mouth for a fluoride treatment.A nice, bright smile is a happy thing to see. It can be tough to get to that shiny goal, though.

It seems like there are many solutions out there for getting rid of stains, plaque, and any discoloration from your teeth. It can be tough as an individual or parent looking for the best choices for yourself and your family. Fluoride treatments are one method to help strengthen your teeth and prevent tooth decay.

Keep reading to learn about the cavity preventative solution of fluoride treatment for children and adults.

What is Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride is so effective that it is in our drinking water as a preventative step to support public health. However, dentists can take your oral health up a notch with fluoride treatments. Fluoride treatment is a preventative measure to stop or reverse the effects of tooth decay. Your teeth will become stronger with fluoride varnish as cavity-causing oral bacteria gets cleaned up at the same time.

Your dentist applies fluoride varnish on top of your teeth during a visit. Your dentist will “paint” the fluoride varnish onto your teeth. You will then have to wait a bit to eat or drink again, about 30 minutes. This treatment can help reduce cavities but up to 30 percent! Fluoride treatment is best if applied 2-4 times per year.

Fluoride Treatments are Safe for You and Your Kids

Anything that has to do with your oral or overall health needs to be a safe practice for it to be good for you. The American Dental Association (ADA)  recognizes fluoride as a safe and effective treatment supporting oral health. Once your infant gets their first tooth, they are ready for fluoride treatments. There is no pain involved in fluoride treatments. We understand that young ones are afraid of things in their mouth, so our hygienists and dentists take extra care to support them.
